East Timor Medals For Prison Staff
Corrections Minister Mark Gosche will tomorrow present Corrections Department staff with medals marking their
contribution to the United Nations’ peacekeeping effort in East Timor.
Fifteen Corrections staff members from Auckland and northern regions will receive medals at the Albany ceremony.
During 2000 and 2001 the Department of Corrections sent 43 staff members to help re-establish war-torn East Timor’s
prisons system, following a request from the United Nations to help rebuild the country’s infrastructure. Their
contribution in East Timor has been praised by the Red Cross and Amnesty International.
Receiving a medal on behalf of his father will be 12 year old Paul Dalley Junior. Paul Dalley, a corrections officer who
served in East Timor and had worked at Waikeria Prison, passed away in September this year.
Further medals presentations are to be held in Wanganui and Christchurch later this month.
