Air passengers at risk from OSH legislation
The new OSH legislation could end up costing air passengers their lives, according to the National Party’s Industrial
Relations spokesman Roger Sowry.
“This Government can no longer ignore the warnings of the Aviation Industry Association that’s nervous about the changes
to air safety contained in the Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Bill,” says Mr Sowry.
“When a major industry organisation says lives may be at risk if the OSH changes go ahead, then the Government should
listen.
“At the Transport Select Committee meeting, serious concerns were raised by many aviation groups,” Mr Sowry says.
“These concerns were ignored by the Labour and Green majority on the Committee.
“It’s inexplicable that you’d remove a specialist safety area like aviation from the body that has the expertise -
namely the Civil Aviation Authority,“ says Mr Sowry.
“It’s also worrying that the punitive regime of OSH laws may encourage aviation operators to be less open about aviation
safety incidents.
“The Minister of Labour needs to withdraw this legislation immediately!
“It’s now becoming increasingly clear that this Bill is flawed in many ways,” Mr Sowry says.
