Commerce (Ethan Tucker, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week due to the House sitting under urgency. The committee’s next scheduled meeting is
on Thursday, 5 December, at which public hearings of evidence in the 2001/02 financial reviews of Industry New Zealand
Limited and New Zealand Post Limited will be conducted.
The committee has invited public submissions on two bills, the Rotorua District (Easter Sunday Shop Trading) Bill and
the Anglican (Diocese of Christchurch) Church Property Trust Bill. The closing dates for submissions are Friday, 20
December 2002 and Friday, 10 January 2003, respectively. For details of the submissions process, please consult the

Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met twice this week. On Wednesday, 20 November the committee considered its inquiry into the
implementation of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), while on Thursday, 21 November the
committee considered the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind Bill.
The committee is next scheduled to meet on Tuesday, 3 December, when it will continue its consideration of the NCEA
inquiry. It will also meet on Wednesday, 4 December, when it will conduct public hearings of evidence in the 2001/02
financial reviews of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met this week to consider the Pitcairn Trials Bill and the International Treaties Bill.
Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week. Next week, as part of its financial review of the State Services Commission, the
committee will hear evidence on Thursday, 28 November from Mr Michael Wintringham, State Services Commissioner. The
committee will also travel to Christchurch on Friday, 29 November to hear evidence from 9.30 am to 3.15 pm at the Sudima
Hotel Grand Chancellor on its inquiry into the weathertightness of buildings in New Zealand.
Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Wednesday and heard evidence on the petition of David Nelson and 8550 others, which asks that
recognition be given to the increasing level of care needed for frail elderly citizens at rest homes, dementia units and
hospitals.
The committee will meet next week to continue its consideration of the Smoke-free Environments (Enhanced Protection)
Amendment Bill and Supplementary Order Paper 148 and the 2001/02 financial review of the Ministry of Health.
The committee is currently inviting public submissions on the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Bill. The
closing date for submissions is 27 November 2002. Further information is available at

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week due to the House sitting in urgency. The committee’s next meeting will be on 27
November, when it will continue to consider the Prostitution Reform Bill. It will also begin hearing evidence on the
Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Bill and the Clean Slate Bill. The meeting will be in room G.002, Parliament House and
will be open to the public from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.
Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week as the House was sitting in urgency. The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 27
November to consider the Land Transport (Street and Illegal Drag Racing) Amendment Bill.
There is one week remaining in which to make a submission on the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment
Bill, as submissions close at 5.00 pm on Friday, 29 November.
Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee will meet on 26 and 27 November to continue consideration of the Local Government Bill. The committee is
required to report on the bill by 10 December.
Maori Affairs (Julian Kersey, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 21 November. It considered the Te Whanau-a-Taupara Trust Empowering Bill and the Ngati
Ruanui Claims Settlement Bill.
The committee will next meet on Thursday, 5 December from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. It will hear evidence on the Maori
Purposes Bill (No 2). The hearing will be open to the public. The committee will consider the Ngati Ruanui Claims
Settlement Bill. It will also consider the 2001/02 financial review of Te Puni Kôkiri.
Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week because the House was sitting in urgency. Next week the committee will meet all day
on Thursday, 28 November. It will consider three bills (Hop Industry Restructuring Bill, Wine Bill and Animal Welfare
Amendment Bill). There will be hearing of evidence on the Wine Bill and Animal Welfare Amendment Bill and the 2001/02
financial review of Quotable Value New Zealand Limited. Other items of business the committee will consider are the
2001/02 financial reviews of the Ministry of Fisheries and Landcorp Limited and the inquiry into the scampi fishery.
Regulations Review (Michael Wilkinson, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Wednesday, 20 November and continued its regular scrutiny of new government regulations. It also
considered the Subordinate Legislation (Confirmation and Validation) Bill. The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 4
December.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee is not scheduled to meet next week. On 5 December it will hear evidence on the financial review of the
Accident Compensation Corporation.
