United Future Two-Faced Over Roading Fund
New Zealand First has accused United Future of hypocrisy over petrol tax revenue going into the Consolidated Fund.
“United Future voted for the Government estimates yesterday, yet their Transport spokesperson has campaigned tirelessly
for more petrol tax to go into the roading fund,” said Peter Brown, MP.
“If United Future always intended to vote in favour of the Government’s estimates then promises should not have been
made to the public that they had no intention of keeping.
“United Future’s transport spokesperson, Larry Baldock, asked the Government on Tuesday why some of the windfall of tax
in the consolidated fund could not be transferred to the roading fund.
“Yet yesterday he voted in favour of the Government estimates keeping tax levels as they are,” said Mr Brown.
“New Zealand First has always had a policy of an increased proportion of petrol tax going to the roading fund. United
Future has adopted this policy as their own but are obviously not prepared to carry it through.
“I suggest United Future grow a back bone. If they are not going to stand by what they preach, then don’t preach!” said
Mr Brown.
