Labour encourages Grievance Industry
ACT Leader Richard Prebble said he wasn't surprised that the taxpayers bill for Treaty lawyers had swelled to more than $10 million over the last year.
"The Labour government refuses to set a timetable to fairly and fully settle Treaty claims. And while the incentives are there the Treaty grievance industry will continue to invent new claims rather than settle the genuine grievances.
"ACT believes that all Treaty claims need to be lodged by the close of 2003. Then the Waitangi Tribunal has to be given the resources and expertise to settle all the claims by 2008," Mr Prebble said.
