advisory: biotech strategy discussion document release tomorrow + photo op
"Deciding where New Zealand wants to be in the biotech future is a key priority for us all," says Research, Science and
Technology Minister Pete Hodgson.
"That is why the government is releasing a Biotechnology Strategy discussion paper tomorrow. The priorities we set now
will influence our successes in the future."
Current uses of biotechnology include: · research into the causes of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and multiple
sclerosis; · research into safe, effective natural pesticide products from plants; · recycling of waste from oil,
chemicals and heavy metals; · conversion of waste to energy; · improved industrial processes for the dairy and meat
industries.
The discussion paper will be released tomorrow. There will be a photo opportunity at the Crown Research Institute
Industrial Research Limited (IRL) in Lower Hutt.
Mr Hodgson will visit IRL's bio-pharmaceutical facility, where pre-drugs are being made for clinical trials for cancer
treatment. He will also visit a new research laboratory where new drugs are being researched, including cancer
treatments.
