Coddington Wrong
Inaccurate comments in the latest media statement issued by Act MP Deborah Coddington reinforce the need for her to
check her facts with relevant authorities before making public comment, says Social Services and Employment Minister
Steve Maharey.
Steve Maharey said that he was unable to comment on the particular circumstances of the case raised by Ms Coddington in
Parliament yesterday because it is still before the Family Court, it is important for journalists and others to be aware
that the MP has made inaccurate statements which could easily have been corrected if she had contact Child, Youth and
Family or his office directly.
“I repeat my invitation to Deborah Coddington and to any other member of Parliament to talk to my office or Child, Youth
and Family if they have concerns about the handling of particular cases. This would have ensured that the public
comments Ms Coddington has now made two days running were accurate – rather than inaccurate, as they have been.
“In her statement today Ms Coddington claims that Child, Youth and Family are attempting to send two childen ‘into an
unsafe environment’. This is inaccurate.
“I cannot comment on this case because it is before the Family Court – but I can confirm that the Department always
seeks to ensure that a child’s safety and interests are paramount in any decision that is made about their future.
“Furthermore Ms Coddington also claims that Child, Youth and Family placed children with convicted sex offender Jules
Mikus. This is also inaccurate. Mr Mikus at times provided sole care for his natural children, not those placed with him
by the Department,” Steve Maharey said.
