High Court Judge appointed
Attorney-General Margaret Wilson today announced the appointment of Geoffrey John Venning as a Judge of the High Court.
Mr Venning graduated from Canterbury University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Commerce and in 1981 with an LLB (Hons). At
University he was awarded the Sweet & Maxwell Prize for Legal System in 1979, and the following year both the Butterworths prize in Equity and Land Law and
the Macarthur Prize in Commercial Law.
He was a tutor in commercial law at Canterbury University from 1982 to 1986 and has been a Moderator in the Law of Torts
for New Zealand since 1992. He has presented a number of seminars for the New Zealand Law Society and acted as a tutor
at the society’s litigation skills course.
Mr Venning joined the Christchurch firm of Wynn Williams and Co in 1981 and became a partner in that firm in 1986. He
was appointed a Master of the High Court in 1995. He is currently a member of the Rules Committee and the Judicial
Information Consultative Committee.
Mr Venning is married. He and his wife have three daughters.
The new Judge will sit in Auckland.
