ACT to Dalziel: Deport Murderer Gay Oakes Now
The Minister of Immigration should explain exactly why convicted murderer Gay Oakes is not deported if that does not
happen today, ACT Justice Spokesman Stephen Franks said.
"Gay Oakes committed murder within eight years of arrival in our country. When imported murderers are released from
prison they should, whenever possible, immediately be escorted to an airport for immediate deportation back to the
country that has spawned them.
"Gay Oakes has already gotten off lightly, having served just eight years of a so-called 'life sentence' for murder,
which until this case we all thought meant at least 10 years.
"Immigration Minister Lianne Dalziel must reassure the country that she is not making a special deal for Oakes to remain
in the country.
"The family of the man that Gay Oakes murdered have been treated with contempt by the Immigration Minister who refuses
to even answer their basic questions. She perversely alleges privacy law barriers when this convicted murderer has "told
it all" in a book that shows her lack of remorse and concern for the victim's family.
"The families of murder victims deserve better. Ms Dalziel must apply the law and deport Gay Oakes, or explain clearly
why she is not," Mr Franks said.
