Baldock welcomes National’s support on road funding
United Future MP, Larry Baldock, today welcomed the support he has received from National’s deputy leader, Roger Sowry,
in his campaign to get all road-related revenue spent on maintaining and developing the roading infrastructure of New
Zealand.
“This is an excellent example of MMP in practice,” said United Future’s transport spokesman. “Where one party comes up
with an excellent idea for the benefit of the country, it is not necessary for another political party to attack the
idea automatically.
“Unfortunately, Mr Sowry demonstrates his shallow knowledge of how MMP works by going on to say that United Future must
advance this idea through threatening to bring down the Government.
“It is a fact that Mr Sowry’s experience with MMP is rather negative in that he has lost every election he has contested
under that system and as a Minister in a coalition Government, he saw only the aggressive demands of Winston Peters,”
said Mr Baldock.
“United Future’s supply and confidence agreement with the Labour-led Government means New Zealand is assured of three
years of stable Government and gives United Future time to advance its policy initiatives through rational persuasion,
rather than brutal threats.
Mr Baldock assured Mr Sowry he will be doing all he can to improve New Zealand’s roading and looks forward to Mr Sowry’s
active assistance, now that he has a much improved understanding of the true processes of MMP.
