Government shows no understanding of leaky homes crisis
Hon Bill English - National Party Leader
The Government’s response to the leaky home crisis shows a complete lack of thought about a real solution, says National Party Leader Bill English.
“As predicted by National the Government has gone for a voluntary mediation service that is not binding on any party.
“It is extraordinary to hear Internal Affairs Minister George Hawkins claim that the problem is not as big as the media is portraying.
“This flies in the face of expert opinion that says that in fact the problem is worse than anyone realises with many home owners unaware of what may be happening to their own properties.
“National’s suggestion of a Weathertightness Tribunal is the only sensible solution put forward so far and could be put in place with speed.
“Labour‘s approach is slow and bureaucratic and does not address the uncertainty and heartbreak faced by homeowners nationwide. Labour has clearly become unconnected with everyday people.
“Most people have their entire life savings tied up in their homes. The homeowners affected are ordinary people facing potentially devastating financial ruin and they will understandably feel let down by Labour’s feeble proposition.
“National will not let this issue rest and this afternoon have sought for the third time a snap debate in Parliament,”says Mr English.
