National calls public meeting on leaky buildings
National Housing Spokesperson - Richard Worth MP for Epsom
National MPs are holding a public meeting in Auckland on Sunday so the public can have their say on the leaky building
crisis.
National Housing Spokesperson Wayne Mapp said the public were confused and needed some direction as to what could be
done. “A fast track dispute resolution procedure is essential.
“The select committee inquiry, now accepted by the Government, won’t address the key issue of liability or give us the
real answers. The public need answers to their questions and concerns now.
“Experts will address the meeting and the public will have the opportunity to ask questions. The meeting will also
propose an action plan to deal with the issue,” he said.
Well-known court lawyer John Carter will address the meeting on the legal issues surrounding the leaky building
problems, and New Zealand’s leading expert in defective building investigation Greg O’Sullivan, managing director of
Prendos, will talk about the building issues which have lead to the problems.
Epsom MP Richard Worth said National’s eight Auckland MPs had had hundreds of calls from people very worried about their
homes and the big repair bills they face.
“The problem is vast and is causing huge stress to constituents. People need an opportunity to get together and have
input into the best way to deal with the current problems, and prevent shoddy buildings going up in the future,” Mr
Worth said.
