Car Prices Rocket Because of Labour Legislation
Tuesday 27 Aug 2002 Deborah Coddington Press Releases -- Transport
Car prices have rocketed due to Labour's ill-conceived "frontal impact" regulations, ACT Transport Spokesman Deborah
Coddington said today.
"Statistics New Zealand figures released today show that new and used car imports have increased by $30 million in
twelve months.
"The total value of new and used import cars in July 2002 was $292 million - that's $40 million higher than before
Labour introduced its "frontal impact" legislation which means most vehicles manufactured before 1996 can no longer be
imported.
"The price increase is being passed on because car importers cannot afford to absorb the cost.
"Labour's meddling could well make our roads more dangerous for New Zealand families. People may hold on to their
older, "unsafe" cars for longer because a new one is financially impossible.
"ACT predicted that this situation would occur. Labour has again proved that it cares more about imposing its will on
people's lives than creating a safe environment and leaving personal responsibility in the hands of citizens," Miss
Coddington said.
