Maharey Bad News For Broadcasting
It is no surprise that Marian Hobbs has lost the Broadcasting portfolio because she has achieved nothing in her term, National Broadcasting Spokesperson Katherine Rich said today.
"When she took over the Broadcasting portfolio TVNZ was one of the jewels in the Government's crown. Under her watch TVNZ's value more than halved and it's profit projections took a nose-dive. All this meant less money for local content and a weaker public broadcaster.
"Broadcasting needed a warrior to lead it and the former Minister was nothing more than a wet flannel.
"Steve Maharey taking over is even worse news. Maharey has long wanted to get his hands on the levers of broadcasting and is no friend of commercial radio.
"His appointment today will be causing much angst among private radio operators in New Zealand as we can now look forward to a TVNZ-like charter for radio," Katherine Rich said.
