26,700 jobs @ $89: success for students
“Our partnership with Student Job Search and business helping students find summer work is a success. This year we’re
focussing on matching students with quality jobs,” said John Wright MP speaking for Jim Anderton’s Progressive Coalition
at an election forum at Canterbury University today.
“Last summer over 26,700 students found work through Student Job Search at an average cost of $89. And that’s not
including those who found work through other channels.
“That’s a success for students because they are earning money and gaining experience. A success for business because
they’re getting skilled workers.
A success for government because we making effective use of public money,“ said John Wright.
This year, the jobs machine is putting $484,000 into the SNAP scheme which was successfully piloted last year. SNAP,
operated through Student Job Search, matches students with business skills shortages. It finds jobs of thirty hours or
more a week, lasting at least four weeks, where students are able to use their skills. Small business benefits because
they are able to get affordable skilled help.
“We know students would rather have a job. And they want work relevant to their study. Students have the skills to get a
job and that’s good for them and for the country.
“This all happened because Jim Anderton’s team is in Government.
“Students can help keep it that way by a party vote for the Progressive Coalition. Just 3.6% - 4.4% of the party votes
will return five or six MPs, enough for a stable majority coalition government. Less than that means instability and
another election next year,” said John Wright MP.
