The Government has lodged an appeal of the High Court’s April decision over dental subsidy cuts made by the National
government between 1995 and 1999, Associate Education (Tertiary Education) Minister Steve Maharey said today.
The Government has decided to file an appeal to preserve its position.
Steve Maharey said that the government does not rule out further discussions with the student representatives and Otago
University, but it is not actively involved in discussions at this time.
“At the moment the matter can’t be concluded one way or the other and it is important for the Government to preserve its
position. The Government has instructed the Crown Law Office to file a Notice of Appeal to give certainty to the
situation for the time being.
“It is important to state that the present government acted quickly and reversed National’s dentistry funding cuts
within its first month in office,” Steve Maharey said.
