Alliance welcomes Sustainability Council’s position on GMO moratorium
Alliance leader Laila Harré has congratulated the Sustainability Council of New Zealand for its productive contribution to the debate over the release of GMOs.
“The Council’s position shows that there is broad support for the moratorium to last beyond October next year.
“A five year moratorium is a much better starting point than the ultimatum that’s been laid down by Labour.”
Laila Harré said it’s essential that Labour starts to relax its position on this issue.
“Labour needs to work constructively with the Alliance, the Greens and groups like the Sustainability Council that echo the wishes of New Zealand at large – that the release of GMOs should not be rushed.
“The Alliance remains absolutely opposed to the release of GMOs unless and until science proves it will not have environmental impacts that will cost New Zealand dearly 50 or 100 years down the track.”
