Wellington Central MP Marian Hobbs has expressed her regret that the capital is to lose its evening newspaper.
"The Evening Post is very much a Wellington paper and it has carried out this role very well," Marian Hobbs said.
"Local coverage is important to a community's identity and wellbeing.
"We have enough alternative sources for national and international news but indepth local coverage is essential for an informed public.
"The flavour generated by the Post must be picked up by the new morning paper.
"I am also concerned for the scores of staff and their families in Wellington Newspapers facing job losses as a result of the merger. I encourage INL to listen to their staff and unions to ensure all support possible is provided in this difficult time."
