Education and Science (Ethan Tucker, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 23 May to hear evidence from submitters on the inquiry into decile funding in New Zealand schools. Those submitters appearing were the Association of Proprietors of Integrated Schools, Child Poverty Action Group, Quality Public Education Coalition, National Education Monitoring Project, and the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. Issues discussed include the methodology, operation, targeting and deployment of decile funding. Next week the committee will hear further submissions on the inquiry.
Finance and Expenditure (Julian Kersey, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on 22 May to hear evidence on the revenue effects of fraudulent investment schemes. It also received a briefing on the full consolidation of Crown accounts and considered the Taxation (Relief, Refunds and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, and issues raised by the 2000/01 financial review of New Zealand Post Limited and the relationship of those issues with Parliament’s ability to scrutinise State enterprises.
The committee will meet on Wednesday, 29 May in Room G.006, Parliament House, to hear evidence on the revenue effects of fraudulent investment schemes, from 12.00 noon to 1.00 pm. This is open to the public. The committee will also consider the Securities Markets and Institutions Bill, the issues raised by the 2000/01 financial review of New Zealand Post Limited and the relationship of those issues with Parliament’s ability to scrutinise State enterprises, and the Supplementary Estimates of Appropriations for 2001/02.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee considered the Transnational Organised Crimes Bill and the Customs and Excise Amendment Bill (No 4).
Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee next meets on Thursday, 30 May to continue consideration of the Responsible Gambling Bill. It will also begin consideration of the Statutes Amendment Bill and examination of the 2002/03 Estimates.
Health (Matthew Andrews, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met this week to further consider its inquiry into adverse effects on women as a result of treatment by Dr Graham Parry. The committee reported on the petition of John Hugh Grenville East. The committee also considered its financial review of Canterbury District Health Board.
Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 29 May to continue hearing submissions on the Local Government Bill. The committee expects to complete hearings over the next two weeks.
Maori Affairs (Marcus Ganley, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 23 May to hear further evidence on its inquiry into the Crown Forestry Rental Trust and to receive a briefing from the Office of Treaty Settlements on the Ngati Ruanui Settlement. The committee will next meet on Thursday, 30 May to hear further evidence on the Crown Forestry Rental Trust inquiry.
Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 23 May to further consider its inquiry into sustainable forest management.
It also decided to consider Supplementary Order Paper No 280 in relation to the Animal Products Amendment Bill. The deadline for submissions on the supplementary order paper is Tuesday, 4 June 2002. It can be found on the following website:

The committee also received a briefing on the sale of the Animal Health Laboratories.
Next week the committee will hear evidence on the Animal Products Amendment Bill and commence consideration of three of the five Estimates it will be examining (Vote Agriculture and Forestry, Votes Biosecurity and Vote Food Safety. It will also consider its inquiry into sustainable forest management.
Regulations Review (Andrew Fieldsend, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)
On Wednesday morning the committee met to continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations. In the afternoon it heard evidence from five government departments on its inquiry into the principles determining whether delegated legislation is given the status of regulations.
Next Wednesday afternoon, the committee will make progress on three complaints relating to: civil courts fees regulations; Land Transport Rule: Frontal Impact 32006/1; and Land Transport (Driver Licensing and Driver Testing Fees) Amendment Regulations 2001.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Lyn Main, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee considered the Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Bill at its meeting on Wednesday, 22 May. It will continue to consider this bill at its next meeting on 29 May. The committee has until 25 June to report on the bill.
