Green co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons today welcomed support from the Conservation Minister for a new marine reserve on
Wellington's South Coast.
"On the day when scientists are saying whales are dying at sea because of overfishing it is high time we looked at the
sea as more than a resource for our exploitation but as a unique environment in itself that sustains not only humans,
but a massive range of marine life.
"The sea is an environment that needs protection and very careful management," said Ms Fitzsimons.
"The Greens welcome Sandra Lee's approval for this Wellington reserve and we acknowledge the hard work that many
Wellingtonians have invested in getting this far.
"The Taputeranga Reserve will become a place where all Wellingtonians can see the full richness and diversity of marine
life when it is allowed to flourish undisturbed. Like the Leigh Reserve north of Auckland it will be a valuable
educational and scientific resource," said Ms Fitzsimons.
