Holtz Prime Candidate For 'Life Means Life' Under National
The news that William Holtz has received the minimum non-parole period of 10 years for the murder of Shiu Prasad will disappoint New Zealanders who are looking for tougher sentences for the worst murderers, says National's Justice spokesperson, Wayne Mapp.
"Holtz committed the murder while on parole. He has a long record of serious violence, with 50 previous convictions.
"I would expect that Holtz would be a prime candidate for life without parole under National's proposed new law.
"He has forfeited his right to be in society. It is clear that the public must be protected from him. If Holtz gets out there are likely to be further victims of his violent behaviour.
"One can only hope that the Crown will appeal the sentence," says Dr Mapp.
