The committee met on Wednesday afternoon to consider the Tertiary Education Reform Bill and Supplementary Order Paper
(SOP) 264. The SOP proposes the insertion of a new section in Part 18A of the Education Act 1989 (which deals with a
Code of Practice for international students) to impose a statutory obligation on providers of education to international
students to pay a levy. The closing date for submissions on the SOP is 8 May 2002. Evidence will be heard on 9 May 2002.
Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee has concluded hearing evidence on the Responsible Gambling Bill. It heard evidence in Wellington,
Christchurch, Auckland and Dunedin. Next week the committee begins a series of meetings to consider the evidence
presented to it on the Responsible Gambling Bill. The committee now has until 28 May 2002 to report to the House. The
committee received over 500 substantive submissions on the bill along with approximately 1,000 form submissions.
Health (Matthew Andrews, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met this week to conduct financial review hearings of the Lakes District Health Board and the Bay of
Plenty District Health Board.
Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)
This week the committee continued consideration of the Prostitution Reform Bill. Next week it will start considering the
Retirement Villages Bill. It will hear evidence on this bill from 12 noon to 1.00 pm in Room G.005, Parliament House.
Maori Affairs (Marcus Ganley, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week due to Anzac Day. Its next meeting is on Thursday, 2 May, when it will hear further
submissions on the inquiry into the Crown Forestry Rental Trust and further consider the Maori Television Service Bill.
The committee intends to travel to Gisborne on 6 May to hear further submissions on the same inquiry and to hear
evidence on the Te Whanau-a-Taupara Trust Empowering Bill.

The committee will meet on Thursday, 2 May in Room G.006, Parliament House from 8.00 am to 9.00 am to hear evidence on
the legislative provision for the appointment of Deputy Ombudsmen. The meeting is open to the public.
Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee did not meet this week due to Anzac Day. The committee will not meet next week.
Regulations Review (Andrew Fieldsend, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)
On Wednesday morning the committee met to continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations. It will meet
again next Wednesday morning to further ongoing items of business.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Lyn Main, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee has presented its report on the 2000/01 financial review of Transit New Zealand. The report can be viewed
on the Office of Clerk website.
The committee heard evidence on the Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Bill at its meeting this week and will
continue to do so at its next meeting on Wednesday, 1 May from 10.15 am to 1.00 pm.
