Next week the committee will meet all day Thursday, 11 April, to hear evidence on two bills and give further
consideration the its 2000/01 financial reviews of the State-owned generators. It is required to report on these reviews
by 17 April 2002.
In the morning the committee will hear evidence on the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill. This bill makes a number of
unrelated amendments to improve the management and allocation of rights to Crown-owned minerals and to address issues
that have arisen because of a recent High Court decision concerning the transition from the previous regime under the
Mining Act 1971 and the Coal Mines Act 1979 to the regime under the Crown Minerals Act 1991.
Later the committee will hear submissions on the Consumer Protection (Definitions of Goods and Services) Bill. The bill
amends the definitions of goods in various consumer and commercial legislation to ensure that computer software,
electricity, gas, telecommunications signals, and water are included within the scope of the legislation. The bill also
amends the definitions of services, supplier and telecommunications signal in certain Acts.
Education and Science (Louise Gardiner, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee will next meet on Thursday, 18 April, to continue consideration of the Tertiary Education Reform Bill. The
report is now due by 6 May 2002.
Finance and Expenditure (Julian Kersey, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee will meet on Wednesday, 10 April, in Room G.006, Parliament House, to hear evidence of the Securities
Markets and Institutions Bill from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. This is open to the public. The committee will consider also
issues related to the Estimates of Appropriations and the financial review of New Zealand Post Limited.
Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee will meet in Auckland on 11 and 12 April 2002 to begin hearing evidence on the Responsible Gambling Bill.
In addition, the committee will hear evidence on this bill in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The dates and times
of these hearings are yet to be notified.
Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)
The next meeting will be on 10 April. It will hear evidence from the Legal Services Agency on its financial for 2000/01.
The hearing will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 11.30 am in Room G.005, Parliament House. The committee will
also continue with its inquiry into the 2001 local elections and the Prostitution Reform Bill.
