Tithes For Maori TV - You Must Be Joking!

Published: Thu 4 Apr 2002 04:19 PM
It would be foolish to tithe TVNZ advertising in order to pay for the new Maori television station, ACT Broadcasting Spokesman MP Penny Webster said today.
"ACT opposes the creation of a separatist Maori television station. We certainly oppose the Nga Aho Whakaari proposal to drain resources from TVNZ for the new channel.
"Our state network is not a golden goose. It is already headed toward cash-strapped status because of the silly Charter. Charging advertisers extra will just push them to other channels.
"The Government should never have chosen to create an entire channel - there were other proposals that would have worked a lot better. The best option would be to give up now and return this money to the communities that need it," Mrs Webster said.
