Today's announcement by Conservation Minister and deputy Alliance leader Sandra Lee that pet ferrets are to be banned should 'send shivers up the spines of the nations cat and dog owners' according to National MP Murray McCully. "They could be next," he said.
"The charge that pet ferrets which escape could pose a danger to native animals like the kiwi is no doubt correct. But the same could be said of cats and dogs.
"I am sure New Zealanders would rather she deal with the threat of dangerous dogs. Far more houses in New Zealand have a " beware of the dog " sign than "beware of the ferret" sign.
"At a time when the Alliance and the Government are facing major constitutional crises it is great to see that the deputy leader of the Alliance has her focus on the really big issues of our time," he said.
