Local Alliance MP Welcomes New Kiwibanks To Christchurch
27 March 2002
Kevin Campbell, Alliance MP from the Christchurch East electorate will celebrate the opening of Kiwibank in Christchurch today, with Deputy Prime Minister and kiwi bank advocate, Jim Anderton MP.
"It's just brilliant to be at the opening of a bank after so many have closed in recent years and especially good that it is a kiwi owned bank. Since 1993 over 670 bank branches have been closed around the country meaning job losses and lost services to communities.
"The loss of banking services in Christchurch have been of great concern to people living here. The closures of banks in Bishopdale, Woolston and Sumner, at a time when banks were sending huge profits overseas, were deplorable.
"Ever since the sale of the BNZ, Jim Anderton has been promoting the idea of a Kiwi owned bank. The Alliance in government has made this goal a reality. It is very rewarding for us to be present at this opening of a Christchurch Kiwibank.
"With the opening of Kiwibank we can celebrate the return of people orientated banking for Christchurch communities.
