Whangarei – based MP, Brian Donnelly, received public praise from the Minister of Education, Trevor Mallard, last Friday at the opening of Manaia View School for his work as an opposition spokesperson on education.
In his customary acknowledgement of his parliamentary colleagues, Mr Mallard said, “Brian Donnelly is an opposition spokesperson on education, and to my mind, he is the most effective of all the opposition education spokespersons.”
Mr Donnelly said today, “I have no doubt that Mr Mallard’s comment was a recognition of the fact that I don’t just oppose for the sake of opposing. I’ll commend the government for positive policies, criticise him when I think the Minister is going down the wrong track but most of all, I try to work constructively to effect change for the better.”
“That’s the way I believe the public expected politicians to behave under MMP, “ said Mr Donnelly.
