Audit Report Just A Smokescreen

Published: Wed 27 Feb 2002 10:47 AM
The Audit Office review of Tuku Morgan's documentary for Maori television was a complete waste of the auditor's time, ACT leader Richard Prebble says.
"It's just as I predicted. The Prime Minister and Minister of Maori Affairs both knew before they asked for the audit that there was no question that Mr Morgan had met all the rules - because there weren't any rules.
"The real question is whether $80 million of public money should be spent on a television channel that no one will watch.
"What sort of message are we sending to young Maori? Watching TV is not the way to succeed in life.
"The government called the audit to divert public attention away from this gross misuse of taxpayers' money, authorised by Cabinet," Mr Prebble said.
