Cosgrove Confirmed As Labour Candidate For Waimakariri
Waimakariri Member of Parliament Clayton Cosgrove today was unanimously confirmed as Labour’s candidate to stand for re-election in Waimakariri.
“I thank Labour Party members for continuing to show their faith in me. I am very privileged to have so many people on my team who generously give their time to support me and the work of our Government,” Mr Cosgrove said.
“There is no greater honour in a democracy than being elected by your community to represent them in Parliament. The election campaign is still many months away, but I look forward to it with relish. I will be campaigning on my record of delivery to the people of Waimakariri and also the Government’s record of keeping its promises.”
“I said when I was first elected that I would never take the people of Waimakariri for granted and I stand by that commitment. General elections are more about the people than politicians because it is an opportunity for constituents to have their say in the democratic process.”
“I intend to keep working hard on local issues for Waimakariri. I will be running a positive campaign with no political stunts and I will continue as I have for the last two years to listen to and take on board the views of my constituents,” Mr Cosgrove said.
Mr Cosgrove, who was elected to represent Waimakariri in 1999, has recently returned from being the first New Zealand Politician to be selected by the World Economic Forum as one of 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow, and it was in this capacity that he attended the Forum’s recent Annual Meeting in New York.
He is the only Member of the Parliament to be formally appointed as a Member assisting a Minister, in this case the Minister for Information Technology, Hon Paul Swain. This appointment entails promoting E-Commerce within the private sector, together with being a Member of the Government’s E-Commerce Action Team (ECAT).
Mr Cosgrove sits on the Finance and Expenditure and Primary Production Select Committees and chairs the Finance & Expenditure Caucus Committee, and is also a member of the Justice, Commerce and Rural Affairs Caucus Committees.
