New Zealand has lost a unique actor with the tragic death of Kevin Smith, National's spokesperson for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Belinda Vernon, said today.
"Kevin Smith was a distinctive actor who left a deep impression on all who experienced his acting. In theatre and in film he was larger than life. His penetrating eyes and brooding good looks embraced a spirit that expressed itself through his wide array of acting.
"New Zealand has lost a fine actor, just as he was about to launch on a further development of his brilliant career.
"He had achieved so much, yet there was so much more for him to achieve.
"Kevin Smith leaves a huge gap in the New Zealand acting community. He was a man who was noticed. He had presence. He commanded his audiences. He will be sorely missed.
"Our thoughts and sympathy are with his wife, children, family and friends."
