The Government must spend more money on Auckland roads but the funding should not come from hiked taxes, ACT Transport
Spokesman MP Penny Webster said today.
"The Government has taken far too long to realise extra spending is necessary to fix Auckland transport. It was only
after the National Party embraced ACT policy that Labour woke up to the reality that Auckland must be a priority for the
transport dollar.
"They have chosen completely the wrong way to go about things. Reducing red tape and compliance costs would be a good
start. Extra taxes for the entire country are neither fair nor justifiable. There is plenty of money in the consolidated
fund from roads, user charges and petrol tax. The Government should use money from the consolidated fund before hitting
the motorist yet again," Mrs Webster said.
