Applications called for 2002 Regional Museums Policy Funding, as a 2001 recipient opens to public
Regional museums have today been invited to submit applications under the Regional Museums Policy for Capital
Construction Projects, says Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard.
The government last year established the Regional Museums Policy fund to supplement local funding for capital projects
at some regional museums.
“Many regional museums hold collections of national significance, and many of these institutions play an important role
in their communities,” says Judith Tizard.
Tomorrow Judith Tizard will participate in the opening of Aratoi, the new Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. Aratoi
was one of the first three recipients of Regional Museums funding in 2001, along with Puke Ariki in New Plymouth and
Eastern Southland Gallery in Gore.
“The establishment of Aratoi will have a significant and positive impact on the Wairarapa community,” says Judith
Tizard. “The award-winning building has already been in demand for exhibitions, displays and concerts, and this weekend
the entire museum complex will finally open to the public.
“Our performing and visual arts and our collections of memories make a big contribution to our national identity. Local
cultural centres are important as places for stories to be told and re-told and as places that encourage people to
engage with cultural activities. Centres such as Aratoi bring people together.
“The Regional Museums funding scheme is helping make a real difference in the museum sector and in the regions. Once
again the government has responded to the needs of the community.”
The government has committed $5 million to the Regional Museums Policy fund this year. Applications should be sent to
the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, PO Box 5364, Wellington by Friday 22 March. Decisions will be made public as part
of the Budget announcement in May. Details on the Policy and application process can be found on the Ministry’s website:
