Associate Minister of Tourism Parekura Horomia has welcomed today's announcement by Mark Burton, saying the Maori
initiatives are about setting up better systems between government agencies and Maori in the industry.
Mr Burton has just announced new funding for the Maori Tourism Advisory Group and action on some recommendations of last
year's report, He Matai Tapoi: A Study of Barriers, Impediments and Opportunities for Maori in Tourism.
Mr Horomia said the solution is not always money, it's also about government agencies doing what they do more
effectively and efficiently, for the benefit of those involved.
"We need to get the right people talking with each other, or setting up ways to capitalise on the uniqueness of each
initiative, region and ultimately the country. Funding for the Maori Tourism Advisory Group allows for on-going input by
Maori at this stage of strategic development of New Zealand's tourism industry."
"I am also pleased that the "whole of government approach" is strengthening. The Office of Tourism and Sport, Ministry
of Economic Development, Industry NZ, Ministry of Education, Creative NZ and Te Puni Kokiri are working together on the
recommendations from this report and with Maori in tourism. I think finding better ways through the bureaucratic
processes will benefits all in the industry, as well as create new opportunities for Maori people," said Mr Horomia.
Mr Horomia hopes to announce funding for several Maori Regional Tourism organisations within the coming month.
