Piggy Bank Goes Back

Published: Fri 7 Dec 2001 10:24 AM
The SPCA is shamelessly exploiting children with its so called `piggy bank' gifts to MP's, ACT Rural Affairs Spokesman MP Owen Jennings said today.
"Mine is going back in the post this morning.
"I challenge Hans Kriek to produce one of these children who has been told the facts about sow crates. This is a serious issue affecting the treatment of animals that is undergoing rigorous research and investigation by the proper authorities. A balanced committee of experts is currently assessing the issues and will report to the Minister early next year.
"There are two sides to the story. As a former pig farmer I am well aware of the vicious vulva biting, tail and ear savaging that sows can indulge in at certain times. They need protection from each other to avoid potentially cruel and nasty situations.
"I will wager none of the children being used in a cheap publicity campaign aimed at influencing the welfare committee examining the evidence had any idea of what actually happens in real life on a pig unit.
"Pig farmers are taking a responsible approach to these issues and are to be commended for their efforts," Mr Jennings said.
