No extra police for Auckland
The Government is planning no extra police for Auckland despite rising crime in the city, National's Police spokesman
Tony Ryall said today.
In Parliament this afternoon Mr Ryall sought to table answers to written parliamentary questions from Mr Hawkins, which
show the police plan on having 620 sworn staff in Auckland by 30 June 2002 (WQ 14001). There are currently 622 sworn
staff in Auckland (WQ 13997).
"The Government's recruitment campaign is a fraud. Auckland needs more police now, not fewer.
"Auckland Minister Judith Tizard can stamp her foot as much as she likes but there's no extra cops coming.
"George Hawkins told Parliament that he's not responsible for staffing. If he wants to take the credit for more cops in
Manurewa he can take the rap for fewer cops in Auckland City," Mr Ryall said.
