Registration of social workers good for public safety
Green Party Social Services Spokesperson Sue Bradford today said the Social Workers Registration Bill would help ensure
that only suitably qualified and appropriate people were able to practice as social workers.
Ms Bradford said the Bill, which establishes a Social Workers Registration Board as a Crown entity will help ensure
greater levels of public safety by ensuring that ever increasing numbers of social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand are
competent, appropriate and accountable.
"I have to say that one of the reasons I support this Bill is that over the years I have seen a few people working as
social workers or trainee social workers who should never have been allowed near the profession," said Ms Bradford.
"There are many fine and committed people working in some of the darkest areas of our communities who need to be
protected from other so-called social workers who can damage the credibility of the profession.
"The Green Party support this legislation as we think registering all people wanting to work in this field and reviewing
their suitability to do so will ensure there are fewer weaknesses in the provision of social work services," said Ms
Bradford.
"While this Bill is not perfect and will be vigorously debated in Select Committee it does take the first steps towards
enhancing both the safety of the public and the reputations of professional social workers.
"However, registration on its own will not be enough unless it is accompanied by adequate resourcing and management
support for social workers in both the public and community sectors."
