Further NZ commitment to peace process in the Solomons
New Zealand is today reinforcing its commitment to a lasting peace in the Solomon Islands, the Minister of Defence Mark
Burton announced.
HMNZS Manawanui is departing Devonport Naval Base this afternoon to take up a role with the International Peace
Monitoring Team in the Solomons. Manawanui will relieve the Australian Frigate HMAS Canberra.
"New Zealand continues to work closely with Australia on reaching and maintaining a peaceful solution to the problems
which have beset the Solomon Islands," Mark Burton said. "The presence of navy vessels has provided security and
reassurance.
"HMNZS Te Mana has had two tours to the Solomons, and HMNZS Te Kaha hosted peace-talks last year.
HMNZS Manawanui will remain in the Solomons for at least a month. I am sure that Lieutenant Commander Lance Cook and his
crew will proudly reinforce New Zealand's reputation as a good South Pacific neighbour and friend," Mark Burton said.
