Dodson Should Resign
Tuesday, October 2 2001 Owen Jennings Press Releases -- Foreign Affairs & Defence
Action should have been taken against Major-General Dodson, ACT Defence Spokesman MP Owen Jennings said today.
"Even this inquiry, which was never going to slate him, found his actions unwise and inappropriate. For him to continue as Chief of General Staff with no repercussions, is extraordinary.
"It is completely unsurprising that Defence Minister Burton welcomes the report. He will no doubt welcome the outcomes of the other whitewashes he has labelled 'investigations', too.
"So many questions are still unanswered. Mr Burton is determined not to seek any answers. He's the Minister of Whitewash, the Spokesman for Soft Options, and the defender of the indefensible.
"At a time when New Zealanders are focussing more than ever on our security, we want to be reassured the Defence Force is led by people who do not take 'unwise' and 'inappropriate' actions. The rot in the defence forces comes from the top: it's time to clean things up.
"If Major-General Dodson has any integrity or respect for the crucial nature of his position, he will resign," Mr Jennings said.
