Speeches: Tension in the Pacific, and Fighting Terrorism
Disarmament minister and Minister in charge of aid, Matt Robson will give the key note address at an international
seminar hosted by the Red Cross: Tension and Conflicts in the Pacific.
The seminar lasts for three days from Thursday 27 September to Saturday 29 September.
Speakers from New Zealand and abroad will discuss global and regional safety, the changing face on conflict, and
international humanitarian law.
"The theme – Tension in the Pacific and Challenges to Security – could not be more timely, given recent world events,"
says Matt Robson.
"During the worst moments in history – and certainly September 11 was one of those - basic humanitarian standards still
apply and must be observed by all parties in a conflict.
"This is relevant in our own region too. Recent years have shown that we can no longer cling to the illusion that the
Pacific is a region of peace."
