Ken Mair Back To His Old Cultural Humbug Over Photos--Peters
New Zealand First Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters, has sharply criticised the actions of Maori activist Ken Mair who on
Monday used stand-over tactics and intimidation in order to stop the sale of photos in an Auckland gallery.
“The stand-over tactics as used by Ken Mair and his cohorts were disgusting and were almost certainly not sanctioned by
Whanganui River Maori, whom Mr Mair so arrogantly claims to represent,” said Mr Peters.
“He is asserting property rights that he simply does not have.
“Whilst most would like to see this collection stay in New Zealand, that is a matter for the authorities to ensure
depending on whether the photos can be stopped within the law from being moved overseas. The group that invaded the
auction does not have a legal right to those photos, the descendants of the photographer do, under the law and by
custom.
“Mr Mair does not have any of the rights or customs that he is claiming and is merely repeating the kind of cultural
humbug and publicity stunts for which he has become sadly too well known,” concluded Mr Peters.
