Peters Supporting Police Over Marine Parade Closure
New Zealand First Leader, and MP for Tauranga, Rt Hon Winston Peters is supporting the decision of Tauranga police and
local authorities to crack down on hoons and enforce a curfew on Marine Parade in Mount Maunganui.
“I fully support the actions of the police in this regard. Local residents have had enough of antisocial behaviour from
young louts who race along the Parade at nights, often under the influence of alcohol,” said Mr Peters.
“Local residents should not have to put up with this type of conduct. Many who talk to me say they don’t feel safe in
their houses or on the streets. Many local residents actually move out of the area when trouble is expected, such as New
Year’s Eve.
Mr Peters intends introducing tougher new laws that would allow local police and authorities greater power to introduce
curfews such as the one introduced on Mount Maunganui.
