Launch of Te Ao Hurihuri Education Resource Kit

Mihi. I am happy to be here to talk about Te Ao Hurihuri. Maoridom is in a new time, it has new values, it is a changing
and new world. But we must not forget our old values, our tikanga, our reo.
Maoridom has a young population. Where do we want our mokopuna to be in another 10-20 years? As associate Minister of
Education, I see education is a major focus for us.
We need to preserve our reo, our tikanga and our heritage. But we also need to be leading in business, commerce,
education, the upper-level sciences, even politics. We need to be everywhere.
This resource, Te Ao Hurihuri is a great balance between the old and the new. It is a great thing that we are using a
multi-media CD Rom and internet based resources to present Maori knowledge. For Maoridom to participate actively in the
future, we must get a grip on things electronic - computers, internet, video - the lot.
The Ao Hurihuri resource package includes an 8 minute video of the Maori creation story. There are five reader books, a
large bound book, and the CD Rom. The “free” pack has been sent to 437 kura, kaupapa and to bilingual or rumaki units in
primary schools.
Te Ao Hurihuri can be implemented as a theme across 5 curriculum areas - Putaiao (Science), Hangarau (Technology),
Pangarau (Maths), Nga Toi (Arts) and Te Reo Maori. The resource kit was also placed in the finals of the recent TUANZ
awards.
As we move into the future, it is important that we maintain our tikanga. This is difficult when there are fewer and
fewer of our people who know this and can apply it to today… and tomorrow. An example of the struggle is the balance
between ERO and kura kaupapa Maori.
The general ERO evaluation process does not cater for kura who operate in accordance to Te Aho Matua. It has taken some
time, but I am pleased to announce a new review process for kura kaupapa, that operate under Te Aho Matua.
The new methodology includes a self review by whanau and staff, which will contribute to the ERO review. A
representative chosen by Te Runanganui o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori will act as a kaitiaki during an ERO review.
When kura are notified of a review, they will be able to choose their own kaitiaki from a list provided by Te
Runanganui. This new methodology will be trialled at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi in Auckland next month.
Kura kaupapa Maori who do not operate in accordance to Te Aho Matua will be reviewed using the standard ERO procedures.
We need to ensure our people are proud of our knowledge, our whakapapa, our reo, of Papatuanuku and Ranginui. We also
need to equip our people with the skills they need to live in their world. Progress is being made. Kia kaha tatou katoa.
