Greens Got What They Asked For - Donnelly

Published: Wed 1 Aug 2001 03:26 PM
"The Green Party should stop crying foul over the Royal Commission's findings on genetic modification," claims New Zealand First MP, Hon Brian Donnelly.
"They sold their vote on confidence and supply for a Royal Commission. They got what they asked for.
In 1996, New Zealand First asked for a postponement of tax cuts and a referendum on a contributory superannuation scheme. We got the referendum, we got the result and we accepted the outcome. We didn’t go and grizzle about it."
If the Greens believed so strongly in their position, they should have used the balance of power they held to have demanded their policies to be enacted. They didn’t, and they should not now go back and relitigate the issue.
"If all they wanted was a Royal Commission which confirmed their position they could have saved the taxpayer $6.2million and not had an enquiry at all," said Mr Donnelly.
