Government Paralysed By Politics

Published: Tue 3 Jul 2001 03:18 PM
Statements by Mark Burton today show that the Government remains paralysed by its internal politics, National's Finance spokesman Bill English said today.
"More than two weeks after the Government was alerted to problems in New Zealand Post it has still failed to properly address the issues," Bill English said.
"Jim Anderton wants to keep Ross Armstrong in place, because he worked closely with him on setting up the People's Bank.
"Helen Clark wants to keep Armstrong because he is her handpicked helper implementing Government policy in TVNZ as well as NZ Post.
"However, the rest of the NZ Post Board sees Armstrong as the problem - with his autocratic style, and his willingness to call lawyers into Board disagreements.
"Mark Burton has asked for more official reports - but officials won't solve a mess of the Government's own making. CCMAU does not have the experience or the mandate to sort out a fight among people who were all appointed by the Government," Bill English said.
