Disappointing Dairy Merger Vote is no Surprise

ACT MP and dairy farmer Penny Webster is disappointed by the vote to press ahead with the GlobalCo merger, but said the
result came as no surprise.
"This is not a decisive victory for GlobalCo leaders, given they originally predicted ninety per cent support," Penny
Webster said.
"The outcome also shows that many people who were against the merger did not vote.
"It is too late to look at better options, so what we must do now is attempt to iron out the major flaws in this model.
"To farmers who voted for this proposal: it is now up to you to ensure industry leaders are held accountable. We must
all make this work, for the sake of our industry, and for all New Zealanders.
"Now is the time to apply the pressure to GlobalCo leaders. We need to be very careful to ensure that the creation of a
monopoly is not going to backfire on farmers. The complicated and tangled fine print must be fixed now.
"We have heard great promises before. History tells us that these assurances are never met.
"ACT will vote against the legislation and will continue to support those farmers who do not want to be clobbered by the
big guys," Penny Webster said.
