Opposition Leader Jenny Shipley says it was with great sadness she learned today of the death of former Deputy Prime
Minister Duncan MacIntyre.
"Duncan was on the New Zealand political scene for literally decades and will be remembered as a true gentleman. Among
his many Cabinet responsibilities, Maori and Pakeha alike held him in high regard as a Minister of Maori Affairs.
"He was a highly decorated soldier for his services in World Word II and held senior ranks in the Territorial Army for
many years, even when he was Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr MacIntyre was a National MP from 1960 until 1972, then returned to Parliament from 1975 to 1984.
He was Minister of Forests, Lands and Maori Affairs from 1966 to 1972, and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries from
1975 to 1984. He held the office of Deputy Prime Minister under Rob Muldoon from February 1981 until shortly before his
retirement from politics.
"My condolences, and those of past and present National MPs, go out to Duncan's family at this sad time," Mrs Shipley
said.
