Not the time to diminish conciliator's role
The diminishing role of the Race Relations Conciliator has been confirmed by Labour's decision to place the Race
Relations Office within the Human Rights Commission, National's Justice spokesperson Dr Wayne Mapp said today.
"The maintenance of a separate office for the Race Relations Conciliator has always been valued by the public. It is
probably the most visible aspect of human rights in New Zealand.
"It is not a good time to diminish the Office's role by absorption. The country is currently dealing with difficult race
relations issues.
"Perception is paramount in this area. Appearing to reduce the role of the Race Relations Conciliator will not be
welcomed by the public who earlier expressed their opposing views.
"This is a time to boost the role of the Conciliator, not indulge in another round of restructuring," Dr Mapp said.
