Wellington's six Labour MPs have effectively told their constituents to "get lost" over Transmission Gully, says United
Future leader and Ohariu Belmont MP, Hon Peter Dunne.
Mr Dunne was commenting on the region's Labour MPs voting with the Government to defeat his Construction of Transmission
Gully Highway in Parliament last night.
"They have shoved their fingers up the noses of their constituents and made it clear to them that when it comes to a
choice between serving the interests of their constituents and the interests of the Labour Party, the Labour Party wins
every time."
"Never in my time in politics have I seen the region so badly let down by the majority of its MPs."
"It is a shameful day for Wellington, and people who have loyally supported the Labour Party over the years have every
reason to be outraged at the way Labour has deserted Wellington on this issue," Mr Dunne says.
Mr Dunne says it is bitterly ironic that earlier this week the Labour Party Wellington Regional Conference decided to
target his seat at next year's election, as the only non-Labour held seat south of Rangitikei, claiming that as the sole
MP for his party, there was little he could achieve.
"The one group achieving little for Wellington are its current crop of Labour MPs, as this vote shows."
"I have done more to push Wellington issues like Transmission Gully and keep them at the forefront of attention than the
rest of the Wellington MPs combined, and I will continue to do so," he says.
Mr Dunne says the vague promises from the Government that decisions that will allow the construction of Transmission
Gully are imminent will cut no ice with Wellingtonians, who see the indifference of local Labour MPs on this issue.
"Wellingtonians want action, not words on this issue, and will not forget the arrogant way the Labour Party has ignored
their wishes on this issue," Mr Dunne says.
