Green Ideology Versus Plain Common Sense

Published: Mon 26 Mar 2001 11:32 AM
With the Government decision on Auckland transport expected next week, Mark Gosche must weigh up common sense versus Green ideology, ACT Transport Spokesman MP Penny Webster said today.
“Logic tells us that finishing the motorway system should be the priority for Auckland.
“However the Greens continue to harp on about creating a complicated, re-nationalised rail system which won’t reduce congestion.
“Overseas evidence proves conclusively that new public transport systems do not attract consumers. We need to improve our roads, not create a redundant rail system.
“It may be different in the Coromandel, but in Auckland we like our cars. We need a solution that addresses that fact, and not one based on dogma and environmental daydreaming.
“’Light rail’ is a misnomer when one considers that people like Ms Fitzsimmons want to pour up to $1.5 billion dollars into this huge white elephant.
“Auckland’s transport problems can only be properly addressed if common-sense and logic are to be the guiding principles,” Penny Webster said.
