MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT DELIVERS ON
PRE-ELECTION PROMISE TO WAIMAKARIRI
Waimakariri Labour Member of Parliament, Clayton Cosgrove today was thrilled with the opening of the new Kaiapoi Police
Station. The Station was officially opened by the Minister of Police, Hon George Hawkins.
In his speech at the opening, Mr Cosgrove spoke of this being his most satisfying day since he became the Member of
Parliament for Waimakariri.
“It is extremely satisfying because today sees the fulfilment of a promise I made before the election when I was a mere
candidate, which was to get a new police station built for the people of Kaiapoi.”
“Today that commitment has been honoured. This opening brings to a conclusion a lot of hard work by members of the
Kaiapoi community, and I thank those people for their support,” Mr Cosgrove said.
Mr Cosgrove paid tribute to each member of staff at the Kaiapoi Police Station for their hard work and commitment, and
also to his colleague, the Minister of Police, Hon George Hawkins.
“I want to thank George, because without his assistance, we would still be waiting for the plans for this station to be
drawn up, let alone for it to be built,” Mr Cosgrove said.
Kaiapoi’s original police station was designed to house two staff. Since then the force has expanded and the cramped
building was, in the end, accommodating nine officers along with administration staff.
It was announced on 20 June 2000 that the funding was available for this project. Since construction began in September
last year, both Mr Cosgrove and Mr Hawkins have, along with the local police, been taking part in the development of the
Kaiapoi Police Station until its completion and opening today.
“This is a day for all members of the community to celebrate. For the first time, the Waimakariri Electorate has modern
police stations at its three main centres – Papanui, Rangiora and Kaiapoi. I am glad that just over a year on from being
elected as the Member of Parliament for Waimakariri I could ensure that this pre-election promise was kept,” Mr Cosgrove
said.
